Crunchy Easy Air Fryer Hash Browns from Scratch

If you love crunchy hash browns (like who doesn’t?) and you have a potato and an air fryer, you need to try this recipe! The air fryer turns out hash browns that are perfectly crunchy on the outside with warm creamy potato bits hiding inside. It’s everything you want your hash browns to be. BONUS: you can have them on the table in 15 – 20 minutes. And only 2 ingredients.

Okay, actually not just ANY potato will do. You need a potato that’s not too wet, like a russet baking potato. Or Yukon golds. My dad grew some white potato that I used this morning and that worked great too. What I have not tried (and probably won’t) is a red potato. So save the red potatoes for mashing or putting in soups or roasting. Because I don’t recommend them for hash browns.

You’ll also need butter, or, for a vegan option, I recommend a high smoke point oil like avocado oil. In fact, I use an avocado oil spray to spray my air fryer when I make these. You do want to spray the inside of your air fryer for this recipe. Because even if it says it’s no-stick, well, I’ve seen things like this stick. Also when you spraying the air fryer, you get a nice crunch on both the bottom and the top.

So if you’re craving some hash browns and you have a potato and an air fryer, what’s stopping you?

What to serve with Air Fryer Hash Browns?

Of course, you can eat these hash browns simply with an egg or two and your favorite morning beverage. But what else can you eat these crunchy hash browns with?

  • Cook Time: 15 min
  • Total Time: 20 min
  • Yield: 14 servings 1x
  • Category: Breakfast
  • Method: Air fryer
  • Cuisine: American
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 large baking potatoes, shredded (peeled if desired)
  • 12 Tablespoons melted grass-fed butter (or avocado oil)
  • Avocado oil spray, salt & pepper

Instructions

  1. Using a large box grater or food processor, shred your potatoes using the larger holes.
  2. Put the shredded potatoes in a bowl, toss with melted butter, then salt & pepper them.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 400 F. Pour off any liquid that has collected in the bowl, the spray the bottom of your air fryer with avocado oil and spread a thin layer of shredded potatoes across the surface of the air fryer. Depending on how large your potatoes are and how big your air fryer is, you may need to work in batches.
  4. Cook at 400 F. for 8 – 15 minutes or until they are nicely crisped, checking them at 5 minutes. If they are getting too crispy on the outside but not enough on the inside, use tongs to move the crispy outside bits to the inside and the uncrispy inside bits to the outside. It’s also a good time to taste and add more salt & pepper as needed.
  5. When crisped to your liking, remove and enjoy!

Notes

Air fryer cooking times vary greatly, so watch your hash browns carefully on the first batch to figure out the right timing for your air fryer.
