This New Orleans favorite cocktail, the Hurricane, is perfect for Mardi Gras (or anytime you want a little fruity rum concoction) … I put my own little twist on it by using Old New Orleans Cajun Spice Rum and adding some mango juice and just a little pinch of cayenne pepper.
I was looking around for passionfruit juice for my hurricane, and I happened across some mango passionfruit juice at Aldi. That sounded totally perfect to me! So I grabbed some and brought it home. If you don’t have any mango passionfruit juice where you live, try buying mango nectar and passionfruit juice (or syrup) separately. If you’re using passionfruit syrup, you probably won’t need the grenadine, depending on how sweet you like your cocktails.
You guys, I have to share a funny story to tell you about the day I made this cocktail. That day was one of my top clumsiest days in my life. First, I burned my hand pouring boiling hot tea into my coffee mug. Then, when I was making my Voodoo fries, I spilled half the voodoo sauce all over the floor. Then I was roasting cauliflower in the oven while I was making this hurricane. I was just headed out the door to photograph my pretty cocktail when my wrist betrayed me and tipped over the whole setup, sending everything all over the place and making a huge and very sticky mess (not to mention a lot of ice cubes all over the place).
Right about then, the fire alarm went off because tiny bits of the cauliflower in the oven were burning. So, in the midst of the fire alarm screaming at me, I opened some windows/doors quickly to air out the house, cleaned up the sticky mess by the door (fortunately the glass didn’t break when it fell!) … then found a new bottle of rum to reconstruct the cocktail. All the while the fire alarm was still sounding … my poor ears were so happy to step outside to photograph the drink! Finally once I’d finished taking pictures and safely brought the second cocktail back in, the fire alarm finally quieted down … and I was incredibly grateful to just sit down in silence and sip on my delicious hurricane. (And also grateful that my sensitive hearing kids weren’t home to witness this crazy scene!)
So I hope your day went better than THAT … cheers to you, my foodie friends! Happy Mardi Gras!
